CITIZENS FOR THE
NEW EUROPE
The
Consumers’ Association is a partner in an international
project called “Citizens for the New Europe”.
This
project is managed by Active Citizenship Network (ACN)
with the support of the European Commission, DG Education
and Culture. There are 35 citizens’ organisations from
the 28 ‘New Europe’ countries.
“Citizens
for the New Europe” deals with public policies on civic
activism that is implemented at the national as well as
the European level. By public policy is taken to mean the
sum of actions taken by public authorities in the face of
a public problem. These actions are usually broken down
into setting the agenda of public issues; planning
strategies and programmes; making decisions on a plan of
action in the forms of laws, regulations, operational
decisions; implementation through actions, structures,
resources; evaluation of the outcomes and impacts of the
plan. In our case, the public issue is the way to deal
with citizens’ organisations and with their role as actors
in public life.
The project
aims at collecting information on these policies,
evaluating them and establishing common points of view and
proposals from the citizens’ side.
This is the
first time that such a project is carried out in the ‘New
Europe’ territory. It will provide basic knowledge for
scholars, policy makers and civic organisations in order
to develop further research activities as well as policy
proposals and initiatives.
